This is a question that we are very often asked. The simple answer is pretty much whatever you want as long as it’ll fit and doesn’t exceed the 75KG weight limit that the roofbox can hold**.
Roofboxes lend themselves best though to soft, malleable items that help optimise the space. Whilst suitcases will fit, their rigid shell often significantly reduces what you can physically load. A very large suitcase may have the cubic capacity of about 130L but you won’t fit even two of them in our smallest roofbox. However pop the things out into a holdall for instance and you’ll get the contents of at least three in there!! It’s physics 🙂
Consider too that whatever you are loading you are having to lift above head height which can be challenging and potentially unsafe. Got a big tent bag to load for instance? Look at how you can break the contents down and load piecemeal.
Remember too that unless you’ve been advised in writing by your hire company to the contrary, it is your responsibility to insure the items in the roofbox.

** please note that in a few situations your car may have a reduced weight bearing limit due to for instance, a full panoramic roof
